New Build Driveway Installation Questions

Every question we get asked about new build driveway installation, answered straight.

Questions

How It Works

  • Do I need planning permission to pave my driveway?

For most front garden driveways, planning permission is not required if the surface is permeable. Resin bound surfacing is permeable, so rainwater drains through rather than running off. If you use a non-permeable surface and water cannot drain to an approved outlet, permitted development rights no longer apply and permission may be needed.

  • Does my new build driveway need a soakaway?

It depends on the site layout and ground conditions. On Essex clay, natural drainage is slow, so a soakaway or channel drainage connection is often needed to manage surface water run-off. The specialist assesses this at the site visit and includes any drainage requirement in the itemised quote.

  • What happens if I delay and leave the ground unfinished?

Bare or loosely covered ground on a new build plot can erode, compact unevenly, or allow water to pool close to the property. Sorting drainage and sub-base early avoids having to re-excavate a settled area later, which adds cost and extends the programme.

  • How wide should a new build driveway be?

A single-car driveway is typically a minimum of 2.4 metres wide, but 3 metres allows comfortable door opening. A double driveway is usually 4.8 metres or more. Width, turning space, and kerb crossing dimensions are all confirmed at the layout stage before edging is set.

  • Will a resin driveway suit a new build house?

Resin bound surfacing works well on new build plots when the sub-base is correctly engineered for the ground conditions. The smooth, trowelled finish suits modern properties, and the permeable surface keeps the installation within permitted development rights for most front garden areas.
